FAQ

What does a hamsa symbolise?

A hamsa is a hand-shaped sign found across the Middle East and North Africa. In Jewish homes it is hung as a sign of protection and blessing.

Can Jews hang a hamsa?

Yes. The hamsa is common in Jewish homes and Judaica, especially in Sephardi and Mizrahi communities. It is a cultural symbol rather than a religious requirement.

Is the hamsa in the Bible?

No. The hamsa is not mentioned in the Torah or the rest of the Hebrew Bible. It is a folk tradition that grew up over centuries.

Should a hamsa point up or down?

Both are used. By popular custom, fingers up is read as protection and fingers down as welcome and blessing. Choose the way you like it to hang.
