FAQs
Does a shofar have to be a ram's horn?
No. A shofar can be made from the horn of other kosher animals, such as the kudu used for Yemenite shofars. A cow's horn is not used. The ram's horn is the preferred choice because it recalls the ram in the story of the Binding of Isaac.
When is the shofar blown?
On Rosh Hashanah, unless it falls on Shabbat, and once at the end of Yom Kippur. Many communities also sound it on weekday mornings in the month of Elul, before Rosh Hashanah.
Is this shofar kosher?
It is sold as a kosher shofar. [ADD: who certified it, and whether a certificate is included.]
Will my shofar look exactly like the photo?
Close, but not exactly. Every shofar is cut from a natural horn, so the curve, length and colour differ slightly between pieces.
